Wedding Guest Dress Colours: What Can You Wear to a Wedding?
Choosing a wedding guest dress colour sounds like it should be easy… until you actually start thinking about it. Suddenly you’re wondering: Is this too white? Too bright? Too boring? Too much?
I get it. You want to look great in the photos, feel comfortable all day, and—most importantly—not accidentally upstage the bride. That’s really the only rule we’re all quietly trying to follow.
The good news? There’s way more freedom than people think. Most colours are absolutely fine. It’s really about reading the room: the invitation, the venue, the season, and the overall vibe of the day.
So let’s go through it together, properly and simply, so you can pick a colour and move on with your life (because I know you’ve got other things to think about too).

Can You Wear White to a Wedding?
As a general rule, it’s best to steer clear of white. Traditionally, that colour is reserved for the bride, and even if your dress is only slightly white, it can still stand out quite a bit in photos.
Same with ivory, cream, off-white and very pale champagne tones. Even if there's a print, if it looks white in most light, play it safe and choose something else.
Now—and this is important—there are exceptions. Some couples specifically request an all-white dress code. If that’s clearly written on the invitation, then go for it without hesitation. Otherwise, I’d personally always play it safe and choose something else. There are so many beautiful colours out there anyway, you won’t miss out.
Is Pink Appropriate for Wedding Guests?
Yes—absolutely. Soft pink shades are lovely for spring-summer weddings. Think rose, dusty pink, peachy tones, or even a gentle floral print. Romantic without being too much, which is what you're after.
Only thing I'd flag is very pale blush shades. In certain lighting (especially bright outdoor sun or flash photography), they can end up looking whiter than expected. Bit of a risky one.
Not sure? I'd say go a touch deeper, or pick a print that mixes in other colours. That way you get the softness of the pink and a bit of peace of mind too.
A pink wedding guest dress is basically a safe, flattering, and very pretty choice—one of those “I didn’t overthink this and it still looks perfect” options.
Can You Wear Black to a Wedding?
Of course! And I know some people might argue this one, but black is pretty widely accepted for wedding guests these days.
For starters, a black wedding guest dress can look incredibly chic, especially for city weddings, evening receptions, or more formal venues. It’s timeless, elegant, and honestly… very easy to rewear, which I always appreciate. And you want to get more than one use out of it, don't you?
That said, it depends on the occasion. For a daytime summer wedding or something quite traditional, black might be a bit heavy. If you do wear black, try lifting it with other colours—maybe bright shoes, a patterned shawl or some statement jewellery.
So personally, I think black is totally fine. Just make sure it matches the mood of the day, not just your wardrobe habits (we’ve all been there).
Best Wedding Guest Dress Colours for Spring and Summer Weddings
Spring and summer weddings are where you can really have fun with colour. Everything feels lighter, fresher, and a bit more playful.
Here are some of my favourite go-to shades:
Sage Green
Sage green is huge right now. Understated but seriously chic—soft, modern and goes with pretty much everything. Garden weddings, countryside venues, outdoor dos—it's a winner. It's hard not to like this color

Dusty Blue
Want a colour that's elegant but not OTT? Dusty blue might just be the answer. It’s calm, elegant, and surprisingly flattering on a wide range of skin tones.
It works for almost any setting—beach weddings, formal dos, chilled daytime parties. Looks the part without trying too hard, and keeps you out of the bride's limelight (which is never a bad thing).

Pastel Pink
Pastel pink is soft, feminine, and very wedding-appropriate when done right. The key is choosing a shade with enough depth so it doesn’t drift into “bridal territory.”
Midi lengths, floaty maxis or anything in soft chiffon tend to work a treat with this colour.

Floral Prints
Florals and spring-summer weddings just go together. They've got that cheerful, easy feel—romantic without being too much.
Just watch the print size. You want "wedding guest," not "weekend getaway." Small difference, but it changes everything.

Best Wedding Guest Dress Colours for Autumn and Winter Weddings
When it gets cooler, wedding guest looks tend to go darker and richer. Autumn and winter weddings are the ideal time to ditch the pale shades and go for something a bit more striking.
Burgundy
Burgundy's a solid choice. Warm, elegant, with a touch of depth—it just works. Especially nice in satin, chiffon or velvet.
Gives off that seasonal feel straight away, and works a treat for evening receptions or formal dinners.

Navy
Navy's a solid classic. If you're not sure what to pick, try navy blue.
Feels smart and polished, but not as heavy as black. So it suits daytime and evening weddings alike. And it's a doddle to accessorise.

Emerald Green
Emerald green has real presence. It's bold, celebratory and made for winter weddings—it adds a proper touch of glamour to your outfit.
Keep accessories simple. Emerald is the focal point and doesn't need a lot of help.much help.
Black
Yes, black again. But this time it actually works beautifully. For an evening wedding in winter, black is more than appropriate—it can look seriously polished.
Pick something with texture, movement or interesting details to keep it from feeling too plain. Think draping, lace or a floatier silhouette.

How to Choose the Right Wedding Guest Dress Colour
Still not sure where to start? Don't worry. I've got you.
Here's what I'd do.
Check the invitation first. It tells you more than you think. Formal? Casual? Outdoors? Evening? That alone cuts your options down a lot.
Then think about the season. Light shades and florals work best in spring and summer. Rich tones and deeper colours feel right in autumn and winter.
Also—pick something you actually like wearing. You'll feel the difference straight away.
You don’t want to blend in. You also don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons. Keep it simple. Look the part. Feel at ease. Let the couple have their moment. And still feel like yourself.
And honestly? When you get that balance right, everything else just falls into place.
